Daydream Believer

When I was in middle school, early release days meant I got home in time to watch "The Monkees" reruns (old shows) on TV.  Did you watch TV when you were a child?  What did you watch?

We have school on time today -- Feb. 21, 2019. Only the children are two hours late.

Coming late is better than not coming at all!

NO SCHOOL WEDNESDAY, FEB. 20, 2019

What are you doing this snow day?  Are you making anything?

Chinese Lantern Festival!

Did you taste the bean cakes that Yuna brought?  Feb. 19, 2019 was the Lantern Festival in China.

When I looked up Chinese Lantern Festival, I didn't expect a Disney song, but it came up and it has good practice contrasting simple past with simple present!!

Lantern Festival from three years ago...

Did you ever go to a lantern festival?  Where?  What did you do?

We can work it out!

We say "work it out" to mean repair a relationship after an argument.  (Argument=fight with words)  Did you ever work it out after arguing with a spouse, friend, or sister?  Write about the argument and the solution.

Computer Class--- Write a comment and tell me about a day in the past. Then PRACTICE!!

If you don't have a lot of experience on a computer, "Learning Chocolate" is a great way to learn new English Vocabulary and practice using the mouse.  "Drag" things by clicking on them and holding down the button as you move the mouse.  Let the button come up when the object is where you want it.

Using Ventures Arcade practices using the mouse, using good grammar, and the vocabulary in the book.  If you do yellow or red level, skip the first activity in each unit because you need the book's vocabulary list.

Learning Chocolate and Ventures Arcade are better on computers than phones.

People that need speaking:  Repetitively sing with English songs you like.  Listen and speak minimal pairs.

Computer Vocabulary -- accessories  Video: Computer terms slowly repeated

Parts of a computer

Chores around the house

Call Me Maybe

This is so fast and so sketchy, but it's also fun, repetitive and great for pronouncing past tense!

Do you believe in love at first sight?  Write about meeting a friend.

It's all coming back to me....

We say, "it's coming back to me" when we start to remember something that we thought we forgot.

Forgive is to decide to let go of anger you had because someone did something bad to you.

Did you ever have a friend that liked to fight with you?  Was it hard to forgive that person?

Do you remember having a nice day with an old friend?  Write about your memory.

Sparks

In this video, the singer saw sparks and thought they were beautiful.  Yesterday, Rabia showed me a gorgeous picture of frozen water drops on a tree.  Write about something beautiful that you saw recently.

My Sunshine

When I'm sad, sunshine sometimes makes me feel better.  What makes you feel better when you are sad?

Fix You

Federica mentioned this song in class today.  I hope all of you like it!  I won't try to fix you, but I will try to teach you to fix English mistakes!!  I want to fix this video by adding apostrophes!

Fix usually means repair.  A mechanic fixes cars. We also use it to mean make when cooking.  My grandmother fixed dinner and served it at 6:00 every night.  She liked to fix roast beef, chicken, or soup.

What can you fix?

Survive

We talked about the word, "survive."   It means live when it's difficult to live.  It can also mean barely live.  In the next song, "Don't just survive" means do more than barely live, try to live well.

Formal English for texting "Tryna" = "is trying to."  "Gonna" ="is going to" "Gotta" = "got to"

When my students mention good, repetitive songs, I like to put them up here.  This version is written better than Gloria Gaynor's video.  Don't spend a lot of time on the grammar of this next song just yet.  Just try to relax, repeat, and keep up!!

Did you ever see "Cast Away?"  Do you have any favorite books or movies about survival?  Write about it!!

NO SCHOOL on FRIDAY FEB. 1

Some managers in FCPS changed their mind.  No two-hour delay.  NO SCHOOL.  See you Monday!

Flauvia and friends who worry about grammar:  I put some grammar explanations and practice for the class here.  Let me know what is good and what is difficult.  Don't do "adjective order" yet.

If you are bored today, please make me a video with your phone.  Maybe a video similar to this video after 3:08...

I want students to print pictures of wonderful nouns, study vocabulary, and write responses to the questions.

Did you have "snow days" in your native country?  What do you usually do on a snow day?  What are you doing today?  Are you looking forward to the weekend?  Why/why not?
