Happy Juneteenth

My mother grew up in Galveston Texas
where people had beach parties to celebrate Juneteenth

throughout the twentieth century.

Juneteenth is new as a federal holiday,
but it's an old celebration of freedom
even though many people were still enslaved after that date.

Do you celebrate any historical events?  Which ones? How?

Party in the USA

Tell me about parties you enjoy.  What's the best food?  What do people do?

Do you want to practice grammar?

The most important thing you can do to improve English is use English -- talk to people, read, listen, and write English.

I like to teach Grammar because if you use it well, it's an excellent short cut.  If you catch the rule with the grammar pattern, you can immediately understand how to say 10,000 things correctly.  Also, advanced classes usually use grammar rules. If you understand basic grammar ideas and how to use grammar with lots of examples, high level classes can be easy rather than incomprehensible.

  • Try to remember grammar rules, but don't get mad when they don't work 100%.
  • Make tons of your own examples from the rule, and ask a native speaker if they are correct.
  • Repeat correct useful phrases a LOT

Can you find any grammar mistakes in this grammar song?

Some people in our class got an excellent grammar education before this class.  Some never had a chance to learn grammar before. Here are links for some topics you should master before going to high intermediate.  If you want grammar practice, try these links.  If you find other helpful websites, please send them to me.

Promotion

I promote on whether I think you have a good chance of survival in the next level. I assess your level for reading, writing, speaking, and listening.  Three of these should be above our level for you to move up.

This time is unusual. Usually my managers are very strict about a 217 or higher reading score. I really want you to use good grammar when you speak..  This class, they want me to be strict about listening comprehension, but not as strict about the reading score (still should be above 207.)  At the beginning of the level, 40% of this class was reading below our LI level.  Now you all are doing much better.

PLEASE PRACTICE A LOT THIS SUMMER.  No one in our class can do no English this summer and be okay in high intermediate in the fall.  If you don't have a 218 or higher on the reading test, read as much as you can.  I've seen people who read for one hour a day make big gains in one month.  Write a lot too.

Intense English classes are hard.  If you came to class, you won.  Your English is better, and you became stronger.

Talking at a restaurant

Can you find the spelling mistake in the subtitles?

A few regional differences:  My family says "appetizer" rather than "starter."

In this area, a 20% (minimum) tip is customary.  "Tip jobs" have a lower minimum wage, so servers don't get the minimum wage of $12.77/hour without the tip money.  Servers usually get $2.13/hour from the restaurant, and taxes often take their whole paychecks.  Some restaurants require servers to pay some of their tips to their coworkers including bussers, "expo," (a person who checks the order and arranges the food in a pretty way) and bartenders.  Other restaurants take all the tips and redistribute them to every worker equally.  When I worked at a restaurant, the servers kept all of their tips, but that was a long time ago.

In the conversation at the end of the video, native speakers in this area say, "chicken sandwich" rather than chicken burger.  We'd probably say we like tacos or a taco if there's only one.

Challenge Listening: Thrift Store

A thrift store is a place that sells used (secondhand) things.  Big ones near here are Salvation Army and Good Will.  The best selection of secondhand clothes in the area is probably at Unique.  The most expensive are probably consignment shops in Vienna.  The cheapest used clothes are from Facebook buy nothing groups or  at Yard Sales at random people's homes from 8 AM-12 PM on Saturday mornings.

At the end of the day, many military units play "Taps" at bedtime.  "Taps" is often played at military funerals.  It's rare to hear lyrics except in Boy Scouts.  "Safely Rest" (not "Bob Good Night") is usually the last line.

One of my students suggested the following song as a tribute to military families.
Can you find which word is not spelled correctly?

What are you doing for memorial day?  (I plan to relax!)

Challenge Listening: test anxiety

The best way to overcome test anxiety is to relax and take a LOT of tests.  On a reading test, the answer is always there.  Breathe, find your key words, match up the idea and move on.

Did you take a lot of tests when you were young?
Did you ever enjoy a test?
If yes, tell me about it!

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Are you celebrating Cinco de Mayo this week?  What are you doing?

Many North Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo because they like the wonderful benefits of many Latino cultures' contributions here in the USA. They often don't understand the  holiday's focus on the amazing victory of Mexicans over the French Army in the Battle of Puebla de Los Angeles.

In the US, many people wear Mexican-inspired clothes, eat tacos, and drink margaritas.  Some businesses try to make Cinco de Mayo into a Latino version of St. Patrick's day. The businesses that want to celebrate "Latino culture" often have no idea that different South or Central American countries are VERY different from each other.

Challenging Video:  Ask History: Cinco de Mayo  Try using YouTube settings -- .7 to slow it down

My children's elementary school always celebrated all immigrants on Cinco de Mayo -- they usually had an international pot luck celebration.  One of my best memories of celebrating Cinco de Mayo was when I first ate Pakistani Kebobs.

In Japan, today is children's day.  There are many fish flying!!

Are you doing anything to celebrate Mexican, Latino, Japanese, or any culture this week?

Spring 2026 Homework (scroll down to the date you are preparing for) Never skip class because you didn't have time for homework.

Kahoots

Homework for Friday, June 11-- If you want to buy or bring food please do!  Don't bring children or gifts.

6-11 Today, we did SB 125, 127 & 134.  We played Quizlet Live and did a couple Kahoots:

Homework for Thursday, June 10:  Do workbook p. 118-119.
Study 3 Spring 2026 Vocabulary and Irregular verbs group 6 -- hide-hid/hurt-hurt/sit-sat/steal-stole/swim-swam/wake-woke.

6-10 Today was reading day.  We read and talked.  We did SB p. 124, 128, and WB 124.  We read about a drunk guy at a wedding and talked about parties.  We read about a kid who didn't want to eat and talked.

Homework for Wednesday, June 9 -- I said, "do Workbook p. 118-119."  I'd actually like you to do that for Thursday, and do the reading and writing parts of Student book p. 130-131 instead.  If you worked with our volunteer, Mary Ann Ingberg, it would be nice to give her a thank-you note.  Study 3 Spring 2026 Vocabulary and Irregular verbs group 6 -- hide-hid/hurt-hurt/sit-sat/steal-stole/swim-swam/wake-woke.

6-9 Today students did quick, low-prep presentations -- they made a recommendation, taught a skill, or told a story.  We reviewed pronouns.  Pronouns substitute for nouns.  Subjects do the action and are often before (to the left of) the verb.  Objects usually receive the action and come after the verb or after a preposition.  We did a substitution drill with Side by Side 2 p. 7.  We did SB p. 126.  P. 126 has an explanation video. We practiced Irregular Verbs group 6 with an  Irregular Verbs Kahoot

Video- Subject-object pronouns

Kahoot: Subject or Object pronouns

Kahoot: Subject-object pronouns

Homework for Tuesday, June 7 -- Can you teach a skill or tell a story?  What skill or story?  Do WB p. 114 & WB 121.   Study 3 Spring 2026 Vocabulary and Irregular verbs group 6 -- hide-hid/hurt-hurt/sit-sat/steal-stole/swim-swam/wake-woke.

Homework for Monday June 6 - Do WB p. 116-117. If you weren't in class, also do this worksheet. Study 3 Spring 2026 Vocabulary and Irregular verbs group 6 -- hide-hid/hurt-hurt/sit-sat/steal-stole/swim-swam/wake-woke.

6-5 We talked about the upcoming weekend using be going to _____ and maybe (I, you, he etc) will. We use be going to ____(base verb) to talk about futures we planned.  Use maybe will _____ for possibility.  Might ____(base verb) is another way to say maybe will.  Don't use maybe with might. Maybe, she will ____(base verb)

We reviewed singular, (There is a/there isn't a) plural (There are some/There aren't any) and non-count today (There is some/There isn't any.)  Slides – Count vs. non-count
We did SB p. 124-5 and practiced speaking it.  We did Quizlet Live.  We did 2 Kahoots.  Count-non-count was easy.  Future was a little difficult because a few students didn't remember that be going to_______ is future with a plan, but will ____(base form) is better with uncertainty or no decision yet.

Homework for Thursday, June 4 -- Study Unit 7, particularly SB p. 86, 88, & p. 95  What's the best thing that you ever bought?  What's your favorite holiday?  Why?

Today was reading day.  I did some conferences.  I need to know if you got your goal for our class and how I can be a better teacher. NO ONE WHO CAME TO CLASS REGULARLY FAILED MY CLASS.  If your English is better today than it was two months ago, WE WON.   We spent a long time today finishing Unit 7 in the workbook.  We divided into groups between shopping and raising children and read and talked. Thank you for your hard work.

Homework for Wednesday, June 3 -- Do WB (white workbook) p. 87 & 88.  Study
3 Spring 2026 Vocabulary

6-3  Today, we did 2 quick quizzes for irregular verbs set 5.  We did one to practice past form for positive, but did or didn't base form.  The other checked if students remembered both forms. We practiced using one - the other vs. some - the others. (Explanatory video on SB p. 95 -- practice WB p.89)  We did a Unit 7 Kahoot.

Homework for Friday May 29: Do SB p. 88 if you didn't do it in class.  Do WB p. 82 #2 and WB p. 83  Study 3 Spring 2026 Vocabularyand irregular verbs group 5 (See homework for the break)  We'll do a quiz next week.  I said Wednesday, but Tuesday or Thursday would be better for me!

5-28  Today, we finally finished SB 86-87.  We played Quizlet Live.  We reviewed the irregular verbs from set 5 and used them in a FSW.  We talked about our time off, sales, and did Unit 7 conversation squares.  We wrote comparative sentences about the pictures on the bottom of p. 87.  We watched the video on SB 88 and filled out the superlative answers.
For sale -- people with money can buy it.  be on sale -- it has a discounted price.

We talked about using some for positive and questions, but any for negative.  Any is good for questions too, but it sounds a little more formal.  You'll hear some for negative, and that's not a bad mistake.  Never use any for positive except to mean that you have many choices and any choice is okay. These rules work for someone-anyone, something-anything, and somewhere - anywhere.  Do you want some practice?  Try this English 4 U quiz.

NO SCHOOL MONDAY, TUESDAY, & WEDNESDAY

Homework for Thursday,  May 28 -- Shop for something (anything you want) Get three prices for the same or a very similar thing.  Write two sentences about these prices.  If you can, use a comparative adjective in one sentence and a superlative sentence in the other.

5-20  Mary Ann didn't come today.  Some of red and blue group read about about a special antique map found in a thrift store.  Green and blue group worked on dividing big words into syllables  Syllable rules and the rules for comparative and superlative.
When comparing two things (comparative) --
  • use as ______(adjective)___as to show equality.  I am as tall as my grandmother -- we are the same height.  He is as mean as a junkyard dog -- he is very mean.  This chair is as big and as comfortable as that chair.  The chairs are equally comfortable and big.
  • for short words (1 syllable), we say "more" by adding er to the end of the word instead of just saying "more."  Tall-taller, fat-fatter, sad-sadder, thin-thinner
  • Long words (3 or more syllables)-- use "more" and DON'T add er.
  • 2 syllables gets more complicated.  The last letters become very important.
    • Ends in Y -- change the Y to I and add er.  Pretty-Prettier, happy-happier, friendly-friendlier. tacky-tackier,  handy-handier, sorry-sorrier, bumpy-bumpier
    • Ends in le -- just add r little-littler, gentle-gentler, nimble-nimbler
    • Ends in ow - add er--mellow -mellower, yellow-yellower
    • Everything else, USE MORE -- but know that the world doesn't always.  Some 2 syllable adjectives are correct both ways -- quiet-quieter or more quiet.  Some are not. I want my students to pick "more" with 2 syllable adjectives unless it follows one of the above rules.
    • NEVER USE MORE and ER with the same word at the some time

Homework for Friday, April 10, Study vocabulary & do the present continuous worksheet.  If the Kahoot was difficult, try it again: Kahoot about present continuous tense.

When I teach grammar, I want you to remember the rule and practice making many examples.  Grammar is often not logical. A vowel is an open voice sound -- A, E, I, O, U.

A consonant is a sound made with your mouth or tongue - BCDFGHJKLMNPQRSTVWXZ.

A syllable is a part of the word with one vowel sound.  Vowels can work together to make one sound.  There are four vowels in "Laurie," but only 2 syllables.  There are 6 letters.

My quick review of present continuous (be __ing)(I am talking.  I am not spying on anyone.  Are you coming to class?)  turned into a long talk about how to spell when you add ing.

We usually just add ing -- talk-talking,  work-working, spy-spying,

If the base form verb ends in e -- drop the e (NO E) before adding ing

bake-baking, hope-hoping, write-writing,

If the base verb ends in ie - drop the ie and substitute Y  Lie-Lying, die-dying

If the base verb is one syllable or has a stressed last syllable and ends with 1 vowel then 1 consonant (CVC- Consonant-vowel-consonant) double (repeat) the last consonant before adding ing.  Shop - shopping, hop-hopping, swim-swimming, dig-digging, begin-beginning, occur-occurring.

Be careful, if a 2-syllable word ends in CVC, but stresses the first syllable, there's NO DOUBLE   travel-traveling (USA),  enter-entering, listen-listening, finishing, opening

Homework for Thursday, April 9:  Study vocabulary & do WB (workbook=white book) p. 2.

4-8  We talked about using different answers for What do you like? (I like chocolate.  I like to talk)  What are you like? (I am careful and responsible, but I love to laugh)   What do you look like?
