The most important thing you can do to improve English is use English -- talk to people, read, listen, and write English.
I like to teach Grammar because if you use it well, it's an excellent short cut. If you catch the rule with the grammar pattern, you can immediately understand how to say 10,000 things correctly. Also, advanced classes usually use grammar rules, and understanding basic grammar ideas and how to use grammar with lots of examples to learn a language makes those classes easy rather than incomprehensible.
Try to remember grammar rules, but don't get mad when they don't work 100%.
Make tons of your own examples from the rule, and ask a native speaker if they are correct.
Repeat correct useful phrases a LOT
Can you find any grammar mistakes in this grammar song?
Some people in our class got an excellent grammar education before this class. Some never had a chance to learn grammar before. Here are links for some of grammar you should master before going to high intermediate. If you want grammar practice, try these links.
Do you celebrate Eid a Fitr? (If yes, is this information correct?) What do you do? Did you prepare any good food? What did you cook? What did you eat?
On March 20th, people all over the world are celebrating Norooz. Norooz is an important Persian holiday. Many people clean their homes very well -- some shake it up so much that they get new furniture -- to prepare for the party. The party is always exactly at the time of the equinox that happens between winter and the beginning of spring.
Legend says he got rid of all the snakes in Ireland.
Archeologists say there never were snakes in Ireland.
St. Patrick's Day is a celebration of Irish heritage in the USA,
NOT a celebration of St. Patrick.
People wear green and have parties with a lot of beer and whisky. Stores have sales.
St. Patrick might not be happy that leprechauns -- mythical mischievous little fairies--symbolize his day.
In elementary school, any child (of any heritage) who doesn't wear green on St. Patrick's day gets pinched. (I think some anti-bullying efforts may be stopping that now. Tell your child to wear green anyway)
In Winter 2026, we did units 2,3,4 then we studied employment. For employment, we talked about how to answer the question, "Tell me about yourself." We talked about our skills. (Grammar: can) We practiced using know how to ____(base verb) We talked about responsibilities/duties at different jobs. We practiced talking about our job histories using prepositions of time.
Many people in the USA only do line dances at weddings. Some people get together just to do them.
I think the most popular line dance in the USA is called the "Electric Slide." Although this video is made for fourth grade children, I think it's good.
The Cha Cha Slide is also very popular because the music tells you what to do!
The Music also tells you how to do the Cupid Shuffle
Instructions....
and the real music for it!
Fairfax County Public School PE taught all my children to do "Cotton Eye Joe,"
with the touch across version, not the stomp.
Sometimes all the neighborhood kids did it at pool parties at our neighborhood pool.
Most people that lived in the USA during the 1990s know the "Macerena."
A potluck is a party that asks all the guests to bring food to share. Many people have potlucks in the USA -- especially groups at schools, churches, and neighborhood pools. Please bring something yummy. If you really don't have the time or money to bring food, don't worry. Come anyway.
Please don't bring pork (pig meat) children, or alcoholic drinks.
Are you going to do during the break? Are you coming back?
Do you have recommendations to make the next class better for you?
I hope you're happy with this class and want to continue! If you are continuing in Low Intermediate, please give me advice on how to make the class excellent for you.
Volunteering -- working for NO $$$-- can give you practice in English, new friends, and connections that can help you get a job when you finish your English classes. Religious organizations -- churches, mosques, temples, and synagogues -- can often connect you to volunteer opportunities.
The symbolic colors for IWD are purple, green, and white. Purple represents justice, dignity, and empowerment. Green represents hope, growth, and new beginnings. White represents equality, freedom, and truth.
How is International Women's Day celebrated in different countries? What are the best jobs for women?
Did you ever travel some place because you wanted to be in better weather? Do you think weather changes how you feel? What do you pack when you travel?
Today, Safaa asked how to say, "She needs to get her tooth pulled."
We use get-object-past participle to indicate that someone else does the action. The get uses verb tenses, but the past participle doesn't change.
She likes to get her nails done.
I got my car fixed last month.
She will get her clothes cleaned on Saturday.
When Kim heard, "do your nails", while we practiced make or do (in 2022), she said that she often heard, "get" not "do" at work. She is correct. I do my nails at home, but Kim's customers get their nails done in a salon. We often use get with a past participle form of a verb (regular ---ed/irregular-3rd column) to say that someone else is doing something for us.
(Official grammar name for this word pattern is passive causative. You can officially use have instead of get, but DONT practice using have for passive causative before you are good at ALL the verb tenses. Anyway, get is more common for speaking in this area.)
My daughter gets her nails done for all the holidays. I only got my nails done for my wedding.
I don't fix my car. I get my car fixed by Backlick Road Service Station or Community Car Care.
I don't cut my hair. I get my hair cut at a beautician.
My mother doesn't clean her house. She gets it cleaned.
I don't repair watches. I get my watch repaired at Silver Dolphin.
I brush my teeth twice a day, and I also go to the dentist to get my teeth cleaned three times a year.
I rarely wash my care and I rarely get my car washed. My car is pretty dirty. (Pretty as adverb=mostly)
The past participle verbs in these examples do NOT show time. The form of get shows the verb tense.
Examples: I am getting my car fixed now. I will get my car washed tomorrow. My dad used to get his shoes shined every month. Mark gets his car serviced four times a year. We got the kitchen floor replaced last month. My mother never goes to Zales Jewelers because when she got her engagement ring cleaned there, they lost her diamond and offered her a much cheaper stone.
Please keep coming and working. It's not over yet...
I've "hit my limit" means I am very frustrated and
ready to quit.
Learning English is difficult and takes a lot of time, but most of you are doing excellent work.
My curriculum is designed for students to study for one year -- three sessions -- before they move up to the next level. Some people can move up after one session, but they usually have great listening skills and they often had great reading with our alphabet and a good English grammar education before they came to my class. Some people come in with reading or listening below my level and need more than three sessions.
I had a student that took my class eleven times. Last time I saw here, she had finished her GED and had gotten a good job at the Post Office. Persisting works.
I often keep really excellent students for a second session so they have the opportunity to practice and learn more vocabulary and topics that we didn't do in this session.
Please don't compare yourself to other students, and
We are on time in Trailer 4! (Actually, we had to move to Trailer 2) If it takes a while to get your car out, come whenever you can. 20 minutes is better than 0 minutes.
When you were a child, did you like school?
Write one thing you liked and one thing you didn't like about getting your education.
Our school gives reading tests mostly to show people who give us money that we are a good program. The tests are completely different than our curriculum. It often takes 100 hours of reading to move up 5 points on the test. Last summer, however, three people moved up almost 10 points in only 5 weeks, possibly because they committed to reading one hour every day. Don't worry if you don't have that kind of time, but please read as much as you can.
Reading specialists say it's best if you feel interested in the reading and understand most of the words -- no more than 7 new words per page, but at least 1-4 new words every 2 pages.
I subscribe to Ellii.com to get reading materials for our class. My subscription allows me to have online "classes" with their materials. Sign up requires your information, but doesn't require payment because I already paid. There's no requirement that you use Ellii for our class.
You are welcome to join any of my online reading groups, but I have recommendations.
If you talked to my volunteer, Mary Ann on our first reading day, you should probably joinellii.com/students 82449N
If you talked to Jennifer on our first reading day (working with the sounds of C), or me after break, you should go toGreen Group on Ellii.com or Phonics Awareness ClassIf reading or listening is difficult, try to point to words of YouTube songs while you listen or sing with them.
What time should you go to bed? What time do you go to bed? What time did you go to bed last night? What do you like to do at night? How much sleep do you usually get?
Symptoms are signs of a medical problem like a headache or stomachache or fatigue (feeling really tired) Hypochondria is obsessing with the possibility that you have a terrible disease.
Many English students are Muslim. Every day during Ramadan, they fast during the day -- they don't eat or drink anything, not even water -- for one month. They get together with family and friends to feast at night.
Islam is the third largest religion in the USA. More than 4,400,000 people in the USA are Muslim.
What's your favorite holiday tradition? Do you celebrate Ramadan? What do you do?
Approximately 65% of people in the USA say they are Christian. Ash Wednesday is a Christian Holiday. Many Christians fast (don't eat) on Ash Wednesday.
Ash Wednesday is a time to remember and regret any bad things you did. It's a time to think about the fact we are all going to die and that we may want to be better people right now.
There is an organization called "ashes to go" run by the Episcopal Church (Anglican (British English) Church in the United States) Ministers impose ashes at the METRO, in the streets, and in coffee shops. This custom has only been around for about ten to fifteen years. Many old-fashioned Christians dislike it.
Is your religion important to you? Does religion help people have good habits?. What are your routines? What are your best and worst habits?
Are you superstitious? Are you extra careful on Friday the 13th?
Juan Carlos made a lot of sense when he said that a live cat should be better luck than a dead rabbit.
How is today going for you? What brings good luck?
Can you write any examples that show that a superstition is true or not true? (Faride wore pearls on her wedding day and has a wonderful marriage. Reham's sister was born on the 13th and is a very lucky person.)
John Denver said his guitar gave him a better life. Can you play a guitar? Do you have a hobby that makes you happy? Do you like to cook? I think good food makes everyone happy!
In our "correct proper English dialect," say, "Don't pay any mind to the demons", not "Don't pay no mind to the demons." Also, don't say "it" in "The trouble it might drag you down." Last, gonna should be going to
Describe the place you live now. Did you do anything to make it feel more like home? What did you do?
Some songs always bring back memories. This song reminds me of ice skating in the 1970's with my babysitter -- a young man who wanted to be a magician. He always found the quarters for the hot chocolate vending machine behind my ear! The ice rink played this song a lot. (Shah la la la, shing a ling a ling, whoa oh oh don't have any meaning, but people often sang those sounds in the 1950s)
Do you have any memories with this song? What songs make you think of certain times in the past?
Do you like snow? Do you think it'll snow tomorrow? Did it snow a lot in your former country? Write a story that happened on a snowy day. What are you doing today?
Martin Luther King Jr. worked to make laws equal (the same/similar) for everyone, rather than different for people who were not white.
On Martin Luther King day, some people volunteer on this National Day of Service. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday for volunteer work.
People who protested that the United States Laws were not good for everybody often sang this song while they walked. Shall = will. "Shall" is an old word . We usually say, "will" now. Overcome -- means "win" or "keep going" when it's very, very hard to win or keep going.
You will overcome the difficulty of learning English soon.
