Let's Get Loud

Great job today Ryoko, Young Mi, and Young Hee  -- I could hear you, and your pronunciation was terrific!

Please don't ever say "Ain't nobody."  The formal English for that line is  Nobody must tell you what you are required to do.  Most or my born-in-the-USA friends say:  Nobody has to tell you what you need to do.

Mardi Gras parties often involve alcohol, sexy clothes, king cakes, and masks.  This singer thinks a party should be loud and guests should be able to do whatever they want.  What do you think makes a party good?

Let's Stay Together

Are there any little things couples should do to make it easy to stay together no matter what?  What are they?

Let's...

What do you enjoy doing with friends or family?  Can you suggest doing them using "let's?"

Yesterday

What was the best thing you did yesterday?  For me?  I worked!  I love working with you.  Thank you.

Can you fix her heart?

ran out of = don't have any more

Do you think this song is true?

Changing the Furnace Filter

Last class, one of my students said that changing this filter is very important.  Are you doing any chores or maintenance around your home this weekend?  What are you doing?

How to fix a leaking faucet

Did you ever fix something after watching how to on a Youtube video?  What did you fix?

Challenge Listening

Listen and repeat bits of this one and try to get the rhythm.
Don't worry about the meanings of the problems.  Some of them are totally fictional.

(Some of the problems are lies.  They can't exist.)
(Also please don't say ain't, set down, done as a helping verb, or nothing with don't.)

Tell me about an experience with a mechanic or a handyman.  Did it cost a lot of money?

at night

Tell me about a time that you were really happy to be alive.  When do you feel alive?

Without you....

My life is serving immigrants.  As one of my teachers taught me, the United States is great because we have so many people from so many countries who work to get along peaceably and who try to keep the best traditions of their countries while leaving the worst behind.

May we always be great in that way.

AM Challenge-- Indefinite pronouns

Please enjoy the posted videos.  I'm not as comfortable with the ones that come up after.  Native speakers say, "What does it look like." NOT "How does it look like?"  Also, while there's no difference between everyone and everybody, everybody and somebody are NOT the same.

After some thought about Sun Hwa's question, I want to say that the difference between anyone and someone is NOT the same as the difference between some and any.   Someone is a specific person that I don't name, while anyone means one person, but it doesn't matter who the person is.  It is also more common to use anyone as the object of a negative statement, and to use someone as the subject of a positive statement.

Feeling the sun...

Does the weather affect your feelings?  What makes you happy?  What cheers you up when the weather is bad?  What helps you when you feel stressed?

Thank you!

Morning class, I am so proud of you!  Every student was easy to understand, and your slide shows were beautiful.  It's hard to believe that many of you never used Google slides before!
THANK YOU!

Evening Class, thanks for coming and working SO HARD.  Please don't feel I judged you when I separated you into groups.  I just wanted different people to work on different things -- some people on spelling and writing and others on grammar and listening.

Everybody who's bringing snacks and working to make our breaks fantastic:  THANK YOU!
Life is always better when you can enjoy food and new friends.

Please write about a time when someone else made you feel happy, proud, or thankful!

WE HAVE SCHOOL!

Many of our children are NOT in school today because today is a "teacher's workday," a day when  our children's teachers get paid to get training, have meetings, and do end-of-term paperwork.  Adult classes do NOT have the day off.

This next video is very juvenile, but I am showing it to you because it has common irregular past tense verbs...

I hope to see you!  If you can't come, please consider using your phone to make a video with your children similar to ESOL students demonstrate past tense.

Vacation

Write about a great vacation!

Happy Superbowl Sunday!

Okay --I want to explain some things in this song:
High school athletics usually start with a pledge of allegiance to the U.S. Flag.  American football is usually played in autumn so team members are the boys of fallFighting butterflies is overcoming nervous feelings, talking trash is bragging and joking in a competitive way,  got your back means we'll protect and defend you, mess with one you got us all means that if you start a fight with one member of the team, everybody on the team will fight for him.

American Football Vocabulary

We're watching the New England Patriots vs. the Atlanta Falcons on Fox, but this is one of the clearest football-related lyrics videos I saw on youtube, and it IS a Sunday game.

Do you like American Football?  Do you like soccer?  Are you watching the game?  Are you watching the commercials?  Can you believe the Patriots won?

Until it happens to you....

Lady Gaga is singing at the Superbowl on Sunday.

Even when you speak fluently, some people don't understand.
Write about a friend who usually understands you or  about a friend that rarely understands you.
