It's going to be a great day!

Very informal: It's gonna be a great day!  Why're you standing there?

Better English:  It's going to be a great day! Why are you standing there? (Same pronunciation as above, with a little more "are" in Why are you standing there?

Can you describe what's happening in the pictures?  Can you write about a great day?  If you want to have a great day, what are you going to do?

Drill -- practice for emergency

There will probably be a lockdown drill at Plum on Friday at 8:30 AM.  If you come early and it looks like you can't get in, don't leave.  Stay in your car with the heat on until the doors are open.

Drills help students practice what to do in emergencies.  In a fire drill, we leave the classroom and get away from the building.  In lockdowns, we lock the door, turn off the lights, and no one can go in or out until we hear an announcement that it's okay.  For a fire drill, we go outside and stay together.  If you are late today, wait in the car for a short time or join us in the parking lot..

Our school will NOT announce in a lot of ways.  Other than that, the idea is the same.

Stand by Me

English is a difficult language, but I've seen hundreds of students become fluent partly because they worked together.  Tell me about working together with someone to do something.  What did you do?

I am enchanted to meet you!

Today, we reviewed verb "to be" and get-to-know you questions.  We wrote about a classmate.

Hi!  I am Laurie.  I am from the USA. I am an ESOL teacher.  I came to this area in 1990.  I like to talk about my family.  I was an only child so I don't have any brothers or sisters.  I am married, and we have five children.

Please write about yourself. If you can, write about a classmate you met today!

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day! NO SCHOOL TODAY!

Martin Luther King Jr. worked to make laws equal (the same/similar) for everyone, rather than different for people who were not white.

On Martin Luther King day, some people work for NO $(volunteer) on this National Day of Service.  Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday for volunteer work.

People who protested that the United States Laws were not good for everybody often sang this song while they walked.  Shall = will.  "Shall" is an old word . We usually say, "will" now.  Overcome -- means "win" or "keep going" when it's very, very hard to win or keep going.

You will overcome the difficulty of learning English soon.

Animated Children's Video about Martin Luther King Jr. Turn on subtitles

Children's Video about Martin Luther King Jr. with actual photographs.

Challenging Video that shows Bloody Sunday -- King's followers did NOT fight back when physically attacked, and got a LOT of white people's support for changing the constitution to say that there could not be different laws for different skin colors

Another Video about Martin Luther King Jr.'s life -- also difficult...

Vocabulary from Martin Luther King Reading and Video

What are you doing this weekend?  What helps you keep going when you need to do something difficult?

I want to know what love is!

What do you want to learn about?

I want to grow old with you

Goals are things we want to do.  Today, we practiced saying, "want to _____."
When people text, they write, "wanna _____(base verb)"
Don't write "to" with wanna, the "na" is the "to"

Always use a base (simple form of the) verb (action word) after want to.
Don't use to before nouns.  I want some chocolate. I want to eat candy.

(I don't want to cry, but sometimes I cry when I watch this video)

What are some things you want to do when your English is excellent?
